The Spinal Nerves

This chart presents the spinal nerves as a clear, vertically organised map of neurological distribution from brainstem to coccyx. Rather than overwhelming the viewer with dense anatomical detail, the design simplifies the relationship between spinal segments and their corresponding functional territories — making nerve distribution visually intuitive.

At the centre, the spinal cord extends downward from the brainstem, branching into clearly differentiated cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal nerve groups. Each region is labelled and aligned with its primary functional associations, allowing rapid orientation during explanation. The structured layout emphasises continuity: from central nervous system origin to peripheral distribution.

There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves emerging from the spinal cord: 8 Cervical (C1–C8), 12 Thoracic (T1–T12), 5 Lumbar (L1–L5), 5 Sacral (S1–S5), and 1 Coccygeal (Co1).

Each pair carries both sensory (afferent) and motor (efferent) fibres, forming the essential communication pathway between the central and peripheral nervous systems. Through branching peripheral networks, spinal nerves regulate voluntary movement, reflex activity and sensory perception — connecting musculoskeletal structures, organs and skin to the spinal cord.
