Smiling Depression

Hiding depression is to be alone with it.

Smiling depression is a term used to describe individuals who appear happy and put together on the outside but are actually struggling with depression on the inside. Despite their smiles and outward appearance, they may be dealing with feelings of sadness, emptiness, and fatigue. It is important to recognise and support those who may be experiencing smiling depression, as they may be hesitant to seek help due to the perception that they are “fine”.

With this artwork we ask people to consider what they would get out of hiding their depression, besides just ending up alone with the depression. It subconsciously places the opposite action to hiding a depression in the viewers mind, and does so without placing blame or pointing fingers.
