Neural Regulation Through the Spine. Spinal Motion (Controlled Physiology) presents a precise visual overview of how the central nervous system regulates bodily function through the spinal column.
This artwork highlights the structural spine in posterior view, paired with a structured listing of spinal nerve levels displayed along the right side of the design. Each segment — from cervical to coccygeal — is visually connected to the anatomical regions and organ systems influenced by its corresponding nerve pathways.
Spinal nerves emerge from the spinal cord and act as bidirectional communication channels. Sensory fibres transmit information from peripheral tissues to the brain, while motor fibres carry regulatory signals from the brain back to muscles, glands and internal organs. Through this continuous exchange, the nervous system coordinates voluntary movement, postural stability, autonomic regulation and sensory perception.
The design emphasises segmental organisation. Cervical levels influence head, neck and upper limb function. Thoracic levels relate closely to thoracic organs and trunk stability. Lumbar and sacral levels contribute to lower limb control, pelvic function and lower abdominal regulation. Rather than presenting isolated anatomy, this chart illustrates integration: structure and motion governed through neural signalling.
Displayed in a clinical setting, the artwork provides a clear framework for explaining how spinal mechanics and neural communication interact. It allows practitioners to demonstrate how irritation, restriction or dysfunction at a specific spinal level may influence regional function — while maintaining anatomical accuracy and visual simplicity.
